Hi Chinmaysai, Congratulations on finishing the 250 box challenge. That is quite a feat. I'll be giving you feedback. Pointing out mistakes you've made as well as things you did good.

    • At the start there is some wobble/hesitation in your lines. But starting around box 80 your lines are getting smoother and towards the end it is looking very good. It is nice to see such progression throughout the 250 box challenge.

    • This progression in lines also applies to the hatching. As you go on these get better and better. You make one mistake in the hatching of your boxes though. Hatching should always go on one of the sides facing the viewer. This goes wrong in boxes 235, 239, 242, 243 for example.

    • There is little variation in the orientation of your boxes. I encourage you to start experimenting with this. Look at this diagram of different possible orientations. A lot of this comes down to changing the length and direction of your starting Y-shape.

    • There are some odd boxes throughout the challenge (like 9, 29, 41 and 80) but these perspective mistakes occur less and less as you go on. They also mostly occur on boxes with extreme angles of perspective which are the more difficult ones to get right.

Overall very nice work. Good luck with lesson 2

    Next Steps:

    • Continue with lesson 2

Hi Gadesenha. Congratulations on finishing Lesson 1, and welcome to the Draw a Box community! I'm Kaili, I'm one of the other students in the course, so this won't be official critique but hopefully it helps you out. Please feel free to reply with any questions regarding the critique, or give me a ping in the official DaB discord server if you need anything answered urgently.

You've done an excellent job getting through Lesson 1 but there are a few things I want to point out that will hopefully help you as you get further along in the Draw a Box lessons.

    Lines:

    Superimposed lines

Overall you did a very good job! The only thing I'm seeing is that on some of your shorter lines, you had fraying at both ends. Make sure, regardless of how long the line is, you're starting from the same spot everytime. Every step of this exercise must be done with intent as you incorporate it into your warm up routine. Otherwise, your starts are done with purpose and as a result you only have fraying on one side (just like the lesson said) and you don't have wobbles in your lines. Each one was executed with confidence, so good job!

    Ghosted Lines

Great execution here! I'm not seeing any wobbling or arcing. Your starts and stops are pretty dead on, I would consider you at level three for this exercise! Nice job!

    Ghosted planes

Not much to give feedback on here! Just remember to keep employing the Ghosting method as you are. Ghosting is the corner stone of Lesson 1 and the 250 box challenge, so it is imperative you give this step the attention it deserves. Great job!

    Elipses:

    Tables of Elipses

The only thing I feel the need to point out is there were some floating elipses in a few spots. The goal is to have your elipse touch all sides of the box given and the elipses next to it. This will be fixed over time as you continue to practice, but I just wanted to point that out (It is a nitpick so don't feel negatively about it). This exercise was very well done! You've drawn through your elipses at least twice, and, other than a few places, each elipse fits snuggly in the space it was given. Keep up the good work!

    Elipses in Planes

Very well executed! I'm not seeing any wobbles, inconsistent shapes, or floating. You've drawn through each elipse at least twice, and each elipse touches all four sides of the plane. Great job!

    Funnels

Great job! These look really good: you've drawn through all your elipses at least twice. The two things I feel the need to point out though are the alignment of the minor axis and the spacing.

There were a few spots where your elipses did not match the minor axis of your funnel. This is something many will struggle with, so don't feel too bad! It's just something I wanted to bring to your attention so you are aware of it and can continue to try to correct as you use this exercise in your warm ups. For more information on that, check out this part of the homework.

As for spacing, much like our tables of elipses exercise, our goal here is to have all edges of the elipses touching each other or the edges of the funnel. Make sure when doing this exercise, that you are allowing yourself enough time to plan your execution, and ghost as many times as is necessary. We're all about the journey here, not the destination ^-^

Otherwise, these were very well done! Keep drawing through your elipses at least twice. This is a great foundation to build off of for your warm up routine.

    Boxes:

    Plotted Perspective

These came out amazingly. It's very clear you have a good understanding of two point perspective based on this. One thing I'm noticing is there are a few spots where your back vertical line came out quite crooked. This is to be expected, as there can be human error during this exercise. If the back corner is tricky to read, do your best to make that line as perpendicular to the horizon as you can. The other is it seems on your first panel you may have missed a box. Remember, the goal is to draw 5-6 boxes in that space. Other than that, good job!

    Rough Perspective

Very well done. The backs of most of your boxes are actually rectangular/square (There's just a few with that wonky tilt, but it will get easier to execute out as you practice). You've plotted back to the VP and it's clear you were able to analyze your mistakes and adjust as you went through the exercise. You've definitely been employing the ghosting method correctly here, so excellent job. The only thing I need to point out is that it seems you missed a box again in this exercise in the first panel of your second page. Just like the Plotted Perspective exercise, we're looking to have 5-6 boxes filling this space. Other than that, though, great work!

    Rotated Boxes

Amazing job! You clearly rotated the boxes and didn't rely on a vanishing point for them as the lesson said. The lines are very clear, and for the most part each box looks like a rotated box. The only thing I'm seeing is that, at the bottom right corner, you've missed a box. This is a really common mistake with this exercise (there is a lot going on here), but going forward and as you incorporate this into your warm up routine, make sure you're drawing all the boxes. This is a great starting point for this exercise, being as complicated as it is. You're already off to such a good start here, so keep moving forward!

    Organic Perspective

Great work! You have not used dramatic foreshortening nor did your lines diverge as they got further away from the viewer, and your understanding of the application of the ghosting method has really come across in this exercise. That's awesome! Keep it up!

Overall, this Lesson was very well done! Make sure to really focus on ghosting moving forward and being more intentional in your elipses. I'd recommend adding the last box to your Rotated Boxes exercise, Plotted Perspective, and Rough Perspective exercises, and then you'll be ready to get into the 250 box challenge! Congratulations on finishing Lesson 1, and good luck taking on the challenge! I hope to see more of your work in the future.

    Next Steps:

Finish the Last Box in your Rotated Boxes Exercise, Plotted Perspective, and Rough Perspective

Move onto the 250 box challenge.

Do the lesson 1 exercises as your regular warmup and don't forget your 50% rule art.

Hello I'm Simon and will be reviewing your Lesson 1 :)

    1. Superimposed lines

First of all you did a good job of drawing your lines confidently and committing to the stroke once you started it. Looks like there is some fraying on both sides of your superimposed lines, take your time before drawing each stroke to put your pen back on the starting point, this is likely due to you rushing the exercise a bit and shouldn't be hard to fix.

    2. Ghosted lines

Well done your Ghosted lines do not wobble. Your lines remain straight, that's good in the future keep the habit of drawing with your whole arm so you have long confident lines! You did a good job of having your lines end up near or on the final dot, keep practicing this exercise (and the others) in your warmups to get even better at it!

    3. Ghosted planes

You did a really good job of doing your ghosted planes, your lines are as good/better than the ones from your previous exercises.

    4. Table of ellipses

Great job on drawing through every single ellipse twice! Make sure you keep doing that with every single ellipse you draw along the course! You tried to fit every ellipse and circle snugly along the borders of your tables good job, it is tough to achieve but as long as you keep striving for it you'll improve! Most of your ellipses are evenly shaped and appear smooth good job! Getting a perfect ellipse is a really hard job but you'll have time to work on it through your warmups.

    5. Ellipses in planes

Once again good job on drawing through every ellipse twice! You tried and managed to fit your ellipses right between the four sides great job on managing to do that! Most of your ellipses are evenly shapes good job here too.

    6. Funnels

Here too you tried to fit every ellipse snugly along the curves well done, even if it is tougher to do with a non straight edge it's a really good practice. You kept most of your ellipses along the direction of the minor axis, keep practicing this exercise as a warmup in your next lessons.

    7. Plotted perspective

As mentioned in the exercise you used a ruler to draw your boxes that's all good. You kept the first lines of your boxes perpendicular to the horizon as you should've, well done. You made sure to plot every single line back to the right vanishing point so good job, even though some back corners don't come out perfectly that's completely fine :)

    8. Rough perspective

Managing to land every single line exactly back to the vanishing point is a near impossible task at this point but what's important is you tried and most of your lines do try to reach that center point! The front back of your boxes is rectangular each time, that's great. You managed to draw every line extension in the right direction, that could get a little tougher in the 250 boxes since you have to extend in 3 directions but this shows you got the base of how to do it! You seem to have used the ghosting method for every stroke that's good! Keep using it for every stroke and your exercises will look much better than if you didn't!

    9. Rotated boxes

The setup of your rotated boxes is well laid out with the cross and the 4 cubes to strive for in each cardinal direction :) Your gaps between the boxes seem a bit loose or inconsistent. You should be keeping these gaps tight and consistent to guide your lines. This way, you can focus on making those lines parallel and avoid unnecessary guessing. Looks like you are keeping the vanishing points the same instead of rotating the box. Remember, when you rotate a box both vanishing points should shift. Double-check that your edges are shifting the VP with each rotation before drawing your line. Drawing through your boxes is also a key part of the exercise and is also making you start practicing this skill that will be used for every box in the 250 challenge. You drew every single box well done! Many people forget some boxes in the corner but you didn't!

    10. Organic perspective

Once again using the ghosting method for every single stroke of this course is a crucial part into getting good habits for your whole drawing journey! Some of your boxes seem to have parallel or diverging lines, that's a common mistake when drawing shallower foreshortening boxes and the only way to get better at it will be through taking the time to place each stroke carefully while drawing your boxes, take your time. You will also improve on this as you move through the 250 boxes challenge! You did a good job of drawing shallower foreshortening here as some people tend to go into more dramatic foreshortening which in this exercise as the effect of making the boxes seem inconsistent in scale compared to each other, overall making the drawing less solid and less believable.

Looks to me like you were rushing these exercises quite a bit while doing them.

I'll ask you to go re read some of the material of the first Lesson, to practice these exercises as warmups as you redo one page of superimposed lines and a page of rotated boxes that you can submit as an answer to my post here. Please feel free to ask any question you may have after you have reread the adequate material and watched the video.

    Good luck!

Don't forget to complete your 50/50 rule and to add these exercises to your warmups for future lessons!

Also I strongly encourage you to go review some submissions on the website :) You can review some lessons 1 and once you've completed future lessons review those as well. Don't hesitate to do a review every so often. It really benefits you so you don't forget the point of the previous exercises and helps other people who are waiting on a review :)

    Next Steps:

Please resubmit one page of superimposed lines and a page of rotated boxes

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hello I'm Simon and will be reviewing your Lesson 1 :)

    1. Superimposed lines

It seems like some of your lines seem to wobble, when drawing be sure to use the ghosting method as many times as you need, to be able to draw in quick smooth stroke your whole line. Also be mindful of using your arm to draw making sure to go back to it if you catch yourself drawing with your wrist, as long as you're focused and practice you'll get better at it quick. :) Looks like there is some fraying on both sides of your superimposed lines, take your time before drawing each stroke to put your pen back on the starting point, this is likely due to you rushing the exercise a bit and shouldn't be hard to fix.

The setup of your rotated boxes is well laid out with the cross and the 4 cubes to strive for in each cardinal direction :) You kept the gaps between each box tight and consistent. That's a key to having a good result with this exercise. You are correctly rotating your boxes, if you traced the vanishing point of every box you'd see it moving as your boxes rotate more and more! Drawing through your boxes is also a key part of the exercise and is also making you start practicing this skill that will be used for every box in the 250 challenge. You drew every single box well done! Many people forget some boxes in the corner but you didn't!

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

This is a remarkable little pen. I'm especially fond of this one for sketching and playing around with, and it's what I used for the notorious "Mr. Monkey Business" video from Lesson 0. It's incredibly difficult to draw with (especially at first) due to how much your stroke varies based on how much pressure you apply, and how you use it - but at the same time despite this frustration, it's also incredibly fun.

Moreover, due to the challenge of its use, it teaches you a lot about the nuances of one's stroke. These are the kinds of skills that one can carry over to standard felt tip pens, as well as to digital media. Really great for doodling and just enjoying yourself.

I would not recommend this for Drawabox - we use brush pens for filling in shadow shapes, and you do not need a pen this fancy for that. If you do purchase it, save it for drawing outside of the course.
