    Hi RAINBOWSAREGODSPROMISE!

    Here's the critique....

Lines: They are very scratchy and not confident. Ghost and draw confidently. You also used a bigger pen on one of the plants. You can draw with a 0.5 fineliner, fineliner, then pens, and ther materials (in order of acceptance.

Texture: Don't hatch and your leaves looked like they had too much texture so try to not always use texture. Your texture looked like patterns so re-read lesson 2 texture article and really understand.

Leaves/petals/arrows: Your leaves (I'll call the petals and arrows leaved because they are so similar) look flat. Remeber to factor in gravity and a leaf's "2D-ness." Try to look at a leaf irl or find videos of leaves floating around and specifically find video or look irl at the way leaves act on plants. Try to observe and understand the flow and the way leaves act. One tip: your leaves need to bend over itself ALOT more. For their flow, your leaves dont always follow the flow very well because they dont bend often but try to not always try to make the outline of the leaf not follow the flow because occasionally it does. Your petals are super flat because of the reasons stated here exemplified. The lineweight of your arrows are way to exaggerated and occasionally on a weird side. Dial back your lineweight and blend it into the surrounding areas of lines.

Cylinders: Read the page on the 250 cylinder challenge and try to apply that. If you have any questions ask away!

    Next Steps:

Your drawings seem pretty flat so I'd say redo 2-3 plant drawings and try to apply what I've recommended to do.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

    Hi WYMARISEA!

Your linework is very scratchy and messy especially in the beginning. Your texture is also very scratchy. Remeber don't be scared of messing up. Would you rather be a good artist or have 1 good drawing. Bad drawings make us good. DAB is all about practice not creating good drawings. It doesn't matter how good it turns out as long as you've learned something from it.

Your number of drawings in one pages is too much. Animals are complex and you need room to figure things out and draw lines that don't combine with each other. Maybe only do 1 full animal and 2 small studies. They get alot better at the end though.

There are some areas where your additional forms feel 2D. For an example, when you have additional forms over the shoulder mass, the additional forms should move around it or if big enough create a bump where they both meet and the additional form goes across the contours of the other mass. (if you need an example just reply and I can post one.) Remember everything is a 3D form and try to imagine them going on top of each other like in the organic intersections exercise.

Occasionally, you make the limb sausages taper so you have no additional forms. For an example, one of the hybrids "leg shoulder mass?" is like a diamond. We only doing 3D this lesson.

    Next Steps:

Move onto the cylinder challenge! :D

It is pretty similar to the other reply.

Hi URAISAMU! Glad you had fun!

Some notes to keep in mind

Your beginning drawings seem very focused on the "trying to make pretty drawings" side. I can't critique those very well because there is too much texture for me to see the underlying forms

It seems you're using some markers in your work. It is good that you're experimenting with your tools, but DAB only allows fineliners till Lesson 6.

    Main Parts of the Lesson

Additional Forms: Your additional forms seem 2D. It got better towards the end, but occasionally (like in areas like the neck and limbs or small additional forms) you have some that are 2D.

I think I said it pretty good in this post just skip to the additional forms section (if you are still confused just reply and tell me): https://drawabox.com/community/submission/ZN6Z6IWG/LE3R9M12

    Next Steps:

It would help if you had some progress shots or some without texture and reference photos. My main nitpicks is how much texture there is. With what I have now you go on to the cylinder challenge! :D

    Hi VAIBHAVSHAKYA!

First of all I'm seeing little pencil or ballpoint sketches in your work. For an example, on the llamas page (that's what I think it is) there is a box surrounding the legs . You can put dots with your fineliner but I don't think you can draw it outright expecially with a different pen (which is what I think you used.)

Your appendage sausages look alot more like cylinders. If you watch the lesson video he says the reason why you use sausages is because they convey gesture.

I recommend you draw bigger for lessons like this one. An animal is so complex so try to maybe only do 1-2 animals per page and if you want to draw more animals feel free to do so.

Also you shouldn't be doodling or doing any other exercises other than the one your focusing on for that page. One of the llama pages has some warm-ups on it.

Your linework is pretty messy is some areas. That may be because of your small drawings or little confidence. Sometimes I can see your trying to go back over an area and redo it, but don't do that. Remember CONFIDENCE!

Your added texture is also messy probably because of your small drawings.

Your additional forms are pretty good. Some of the forms are a little bit 2D-ish, but the majority are nice!

For how your drawings turned out, lesson 5 isn't really the most visually appealing lesson, Even though it doesn't look like a Mona Lisa (if that's your style), you still got something good out of this lesson. Draw A Box isn't about making pretty drawings. Draw A Box is about becoming a good artist and developing the technicals skills needed.

    Here's a video you might like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8OD0_nbqoM

    Next Steps:

Move on to the cylinder challenge. The main critique I have is the linework and guidelines. You overall seemed to understand this lesson.

This community member feels the lesson should be marked as complete, and 2 others agree. The student has earned their completion badge for this lesson and should feel confident in moving onto the next lesson.

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
