Hm, I'd say the focus should not be on accuracy right now, but on being able to get a smooth ellipse that's drawn through at least twice. Accuracy will come with practice, so it shouldn't be a focus right now. I'd say do them like you did in the submitted exercise. The more you do them, the better you'll get!

Thank you so much! I'll keep practicing!

Hey there! Congrats on completing Lesson 1! I'm Ennui, and I'll be giving you your critique today!

Let's take it section by section.

    Lines:

Great attempt at the Superimposed Lines exercise! Your lines are straight and confident, with fraying mostly on one end. There is also very little wobble. Great job here!

Your Ghosted Lines exercise came out incredibly well! Your lines are executed with a smooth trajectory and a high level of accuracy as well. Good going!

You've done the Ghosted Planes incredibly well! The bisections are quite neat and the lines executed on the planes are done well, without sacrificing line quality. Great job!

    Ellipses:

You did the Tables of Ellipses exercise really well too! While not as neat as the Lines section, you have attempted to maintain the same consistent trajectory that gives smooth lines as before. And you've drawn through your ellipses at least twice, which is another great point to add! Good going!

Your Ellipses in Planes exercise was also done quite well. I like that you focused more on smoothness than on accuracy. Accuracy will come later, but right now, our focus should be on executing smooth lines and ellipses. Good job!

Your Funnels exercise was executed well. You've managed to adhere the ellipses to the funnels and to the minor axis. As you do more of this exercise for your warmups, you may experiment with changing the degree of the ellipses a bit more, but for now, this is a really good attempt.

    Boxes:

Your Plotted Perspective is neat and done well!

A really good attempt at the Rough Perspective exercise. Most of your depth lines converge at the VP, which is the main goal of the exercise.

Your attempt at the Rotated Boxes went so well! My boxes were an absolute mess, I'll fully admit xD However, your exercise is neat and you've done well guessing the shifts of the VP. You need a little more practice, but this is where the 250 box challenge will help you.

Your Organic Perspective exercise was also done well! I know you feel like you may have made mistakes, but you have been able to draw the boxes well, rotate them arbitrarily and change the size to show distance. You've done that well and understood the exercise.

    Final Critique:

This is a really good submission with good improvement observed over the course of the exercises. You've understood the main concepts behind each exercise and been able to execute them well. Hold your head high! You've gotten off to a good start in your art journey!

Feel free to move onto the 250 box challenge, and if you have any questions, don't be afraid to contact me! Best of luck on your art journey!

Hello! I've taken your advice into account and done ten more boxes, and I took your advice and spread them out over two days. While I'm still struggling with accuracy, I do hope I was able to show more variety in my boxes, as I realized while doing the box challenge the first time that I was defaulting to the same sets of Ys over and over again. So I went back over them to look at the boxes I did while still using the Y generator and took some inspiration from there about new Ys I could create.

    I hope this is satisfactory -> https://imgur.com/a/LH03joU!

Hello! I was active when I received this critique, so I thought I'd go ahead and finish off the revisions if I could. Here they are -> https://imgur.com/a/LDrEOzj

Before you view them I want to apologize for how terrible they are xD I am well aware of the angle theory of boxes, but it feels like the longer I spend constructing boxes, the more inaccurate I become. The most inaccurate boxes out of that lot were when I spent more than 5 minutes constructing them. I got a bit more accurate when I trusted my instincts.

Also, I found that even when my points were correct, many times it would be off because of the execution of the line. I'd have gone over and corrected those, but we've been taught to roll with the mistakes.

I did attempt my best to keep the angles consistent and vary the vanishing points and well as box types. I apologize for the horrendous quality once again, and if you require me to do even more boxes, please let me know!

    Thanks.

Hey there! Congrats on completing Lesson 1! I'm Ennui and I'll be giving you feedback today!

Let's take it section by section!

    Lines:

Ooh nice! Your lines are quite good! Your Superimposed Lines exercise shows confident strokes that flow with a good trajectory, with very little wobble or arching. There is also fraying only on one end, which is what to go for. Good job!

Great work on the Ghosted Lines! I see confidence and high accuracy in your lines. Your lines are mostly straight with minimal arch and absolutely no wobble. Keep it up!

Your Ghosted Planes also came out quite well! Your lines continue to show confidence. I did see that you seemed to have trouble bisecting the planes exactly. That's fine, but just remember to mark out the midpoints. Or you could try to do the diagonal lines first and then use the intersection as your guide for where to place the other lines. Either way, great job!

    Ellipses:

Great performance on the ellipses! Your Tables of Ellipses show very confident ellipses that are highly accurate (very little difference between the first and second pass). I did see at times that you drew through them quite a few times and that resulted in some wobble. Remember to only draw through them two times, thrice at most. Either way, great work!

Once again, good work on the Ellipses in Planes exercise. You've managed to adhere to the boundaries of the planes quite well, even for the contorted ones. Good work!

Nice job on the Funnels! You've managed to adhere the ellipses well to the minor axis and have it cut the ellipses perfectly in two halves, and to the funnel itself. I did notice you having difficulties with varying the degree of the ellipses. That's fine, and will come with practice. Try to adjust the degree of the ellipse very slightly instead of starkly as you have here. This will take some more practice. Still, incredible job!

    Boxes:

Great job on the Plotted Perspective! You've understood the exercise well!

I love just how clean your Rough Perspective boxes are. Mose of your depth lines converge towards the VP with a great level of accuracy. Wonderful job!

Great work getting through the Rotated Boxes exercise! It's a massive task, and finishing it is a great achievement.

Good job on the Organic Perspective as well! Your boxes continue to be steady and clean, and you've done well varying the sizes to show perspective. Great work!

    Final Critique:

You've got the hang of the most basic concepts from this lesson. Your lines are steady and highly accurate, and your boxes are clean. Whatever I've pointed out is honestly just nitpicking. You'll do great at the 250 Box Challenge.

Congrats on finishing the lesson again, and don't forget to pick two or three of these exercises to use as warmups for 10-15 minutes before drawing! I wish you luck in your art journey, and please feel free to approach me if you have any questions!

Thanks a ton for the critique! I'll keep that in mind going forward!

Thank you so much for your feedback! You're right in that I repeated the same box, however I was attempting to recreate the Ys from the generator. I suppose memory is fickle, haha. Here are an extra 25 boxes with an attempt to rotate even more -> https://imgur.com/a/lrlhGjL

Regarding the revisions, I did try Scylla's method from box 8 to box 13, but I found the method to be time consuming and somehow more inaccurate, so at box 14 I switched back to the inner corner method I learned from the discord. I also experimented a bit with the arrow method from the Discord for 2pp boxes.

I hope this is satisfactory. If I need to do more, do let me know!

I feel that a lot! When I submitted my lesson 1, I was 100% certain that I would be asked to revise some of the exercises xD I was surprised when I was told to go ahead to the next stage. I suppose we often hold ourselves to extremely high standards and struggle to see the improvement in our own work. But that's why we have a stranger be an unbiased set of eyes to look at our work! Good luck on your journey!

Oh! Thanks for pointing that out! I had trouble articulating that xD

Staedtler Pigment Liners

Staedtler Pigment Liners

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
