    Hi there,

I've got nothing much to say because overall you've done pretty good.

    1. Super-imposed lines - looking good. You took your time to align your pen to the starting point and executed your lines with confidence.

    2. Ghosted lines - you did good. Your lines look smooth and confident although there's a lil tiny bit of wobbly in some of your lines. also try not to overshoot.

    3. Ghosted planes- looking good. Nothing much to say here.

    4. Tables of ellipses - great job. Your ellipses are looking good. They're smooth tight and tightly packed. One problem here is that some of your ellipses overshoot the top And bottom boundaries. Remember they are supposed to be within the boundaries.

    5. Ellipses in planes- i don't know what happened here with the ellipses because one they are not tight. I think here you prioritized accuracy over smoothness. Chances are that you did not ghost enough. Don't worry if your ellipses don't stay within the boundaries. Just ghost and without thinking excecute your ellipse with confidence trusting your muscle memory.

    6. Ellipses in funnels - looking good. One problem some ellipses overshoot each other. Also the ones on the bottom corner don't follow the minor axis

    7. Plotted perspective - no words

    8. Rough perspective - looking good. One problem is your lines. They are pretty wobbly. Shows that you weren't sure of where they should go. As i said before just ghost and trust your musle memory. Its better your line goes the wrong direction but it be confident and smooth. Other than that i think you fulfilled the aim of the exercise

    9. Rotated boxes- good but not really good. This exercise is usually very hard especially for beginners. Because your mind isn't used to thinking about how forms rotate in 3d space. Although your rotation isn't quite correct i think overall you're not far off. With time I'm sure you'll be great.

    10. Organic perspective - wow.. Great job here.. I really struggled with this exercise but for you i think you nailed it. I can't say its perfect but for the first trial good job.. I got nothing else to say

Congratulations on finishing lesson 1. Good luck as you move on to the 250 box challenge. And overall good luck on your art journey..

    Next Steps:

    Good job on lesson 1.

Move on to the 250 box challenge

Hi there, welcome to drawabox. Congratulations on finishing lessom 1.on to the critique

    1. Super-imposed lines - good job on the super imposed lines. There's no fraying at the start meaning you took time to align your pen to the starting point .

    2. Ghosted lines - there's some struggle here. Your lines are wobbly. And some don't reach the second point and some overshoot. I would advice you to follow the 3 levels uncomfortable listed here https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/9/levels

First focus on making your lines smooth then accuracy will come later also try the method uncomfortable mentioned of lifting your pen up when you reach the second point

    1. Ghosted planes- i can see that your lines start getting better but there's still some wobbling

    2. Tables of ellipses-. Good job on the first page. Nice tight ellipses. The problem comes in the second page. Though your ellipses are good the some don't touch the top and bottom boundaries. Look at that when you do the exercise again in your warm-ups

    3. Ellipses in planes.- here you prioritized accuracy over smoothness. First focus on smooth ellipses accuracy will come later.

    4. Ellipses in funnels - good job here nothing much to say

    5. Plotted perspective - no words

    6. Rough perspective - most of the problem is here. As you said you struggled with it. I would advice you to first read through the exercise again. But in my opinion i will tell you this. First draw a tight rectangle your frame after you've put your vp. Remember to use the ghosting method. Then focus on each vertice one at a time ghosting it to the vp. Remember all horizontal lines should be parallel to the vp and all vertical lines should be perpendicular to the vp as i show you here http://imgur.com/a/OBmLCL5 ensure this or all your boxes will be off. When ghosting to the vp make points showing where lines will go through and after that execute them confidently using the ghosting method. Hope I'm clear. If I'm not tell me. Also remember don't rush. And don't guess. Be sure where you want youe lines to go. Guessing will completely throw you box off

    7. Rotated boxes. For a beginner nice work. But I'll have to say your rotation is kinda off. Remember we want a full rotation. But don't worry. You'll come back to it after the 250 box challenge and you'll be better because your mind will have started thinking in 3d.

    8. Organic perspective. There's also a lot of difficulty here. I can't really see depth. And most of your boxes perspective are off. Again first tackle the 250 box challenge and be sure to come back to the 2 exercises.

Well that's your critique. I'll request some revisions and after that I'll mark it complete. Good luck

    Next Steps:

    1. 1 page of the rough perspective focusing on the points i said.

    2. Focus on improving your ghosted lines. Ghost more if possible. I'll not request any additional page but be sure to practice every day.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

    Hi there,

    1. Super-imposed lines- good work with your lines. You took your time to align your pen to the starting point

    2. Ghosted lines-good job also but there's some occasional wobble in some lines. Continue practicing these in your warm-ups and within no time you'll be a master in drawing smooth confident lines

    3. Ghosted lines. Good but again occasional wobbling in some lines. Good work drawing all the dissections of your planes. Very many people forget them.

    4. Ellipses in planes - good job on the first page. Your ellipses are tightly packed and most are smooth showing you took time to ghost through them. One minimal problem some of your ellipses don't touch the top and bottom boundaries. Other than that you are ok.

    5. Ellipses in planes- this is one of the places I've seen some problem. Most of the ellipses dont alline to a central minor axis. Also some of them overlap and they are not supposed to. It seems as if you rushed here. So i would advice you to do a page more of them and focus on aligning the ellipses to the central minor axis.

    6. Ellipses in planes- first page your ellipses are not smooth they are kinda wobbly. But in the second page there's major improvement. And your ellipses fit snugly inside the planes. This shows you took time to ghost.

    7. Plotted perspective - good obvious

    8. Rough perspective - also good. No problems here. The exercises is mainly meant for you to start thinking of drawing boxes without plotting them back to the vanishing point. So perspective will not be perfect at first but with practice and by doing the 250 box challenge your 3d thinking will expand.

    9. Rotated boxes- great job. Your rotation is good. This exercise was meant to be hard but you nailed it

    10. Organic perspective- good job on attempting the exercise. I would advice you to exaggerate the difference between the box closer to you and the one further away. This will make them have more depth. Also most of your boxes perspective is wrong but you'll work on that on the 250 box challenge

Good job on completing lesson on. Now on you go to the 250 box challenge. But please before you do do one page of the ellipses in funnels. Thank you

    Next Steps:

    1. 1 page ellipses in funnels

    2. Move to 250 box challenge

    3. Good luck

    Hi Asher,

Thank you for having the courage to submit your work even though its done in pencil. Please read this article https://drawabox.com/article/ink.

I would advise you to please redo the exercises in ink now that you have your felt tip pen. Because ink is so unforgiving that you are aware of every mark you put down. I understand the lack of having the ink pen while doing the exercises but please redo in pen. I've really seen myself improve after lesson 1 using ink. Pencil doesn't really help a lot. I'll just point out your mistakes.

    1. Super imposer lines they are good. But remember pencil and ink are different mediums soo please redo this exercises with ink and see the difference

    2. Ghosted lines- most of them are wobbly. Shows you have not yet mastered the act of pivoting from your shoulders. Its even harder to get smooth lines with ink because every single wobble is clearly seen.

    3. Your ghosted planes aren't quite visible so i can't critique them.

    4. Tables of ellipses - the first page is so messy and sketchy and is not complete. The second page is better and i like how the ellipses are smooth. also good work ensuring they touch the top and bottom boundaries and ensuring they are tightly packed. But remember that's pencil. Believe me its soo hard to get a smooth ellipse using ink. This is the part i struggled most with.

    5. Ellipses in planes- are good they are smooth and thats what the exercise is aiming for. Hope u used the ghosting method there

    6. Plotted perspective is obviously pass

    7. Rough perspective.. One problem here is how sketchy the boxes are. Also the cross hatching is wrong. Remember to use ghosting method when cross hatching. Your lines are also wobbly. Apart from that your good. Perspective wise, not bad but not perfect your need to continue practicing them in your warm ups.

    8. Rotated boxes- wow, im surprised. Your rotation is good but not yet perfect. But wow,, you nailed rotated boxes down.. And you did a good job not being sketchy here.

    9. Organic perspective - good job with line weight. Perspective is a lil bit off but don't worry about that. We work on perspective in the 250 box challenge.

That's all good work for submitting your work. Please redo in ink. It will help you

    Next Steps:

    1. Redo the whole exercise in ink. It will help you so much. It may be a lot of work but it will help you alot.

    2. Focus on your lines when redoing the exercises. Ghost more if possible. The goal is to have smooth and confident lines.

    3. Good luck

Please forward your work after that. I know it will so easy because you have already done the lesson. I personally do the exercises every day in my 30 min warm up.

    Hi there,

Good work on the superimpose lines. There's no fraying on the starting points. This shows you took time to align your pen to the starting point

Ghosted lines are also good but there's some bit of wobbling in some of your lines. Most of them are great.

Ghosted planes are not soo good. Most of them have wobbling. Looks like you rushed a bit on these. I'd advice you to practice them during your warm ups.

Tables of ellipses . On the first page i would say you did a good job the ellipses were tightly packed and the touched both the top and bottom boundaries. But you messed this up on the second page. You ellipses became wobbly and some weren't touching the top and bottom boundaries. Also there was a lot of overlapping. Remember you should focus on smoothness and not accuracy

Ellipses in planes. Wobbly ellipses. You prioritized accuracy over smoothness and that is wrong.you should focus on smoothness over accuracy. It helps to do more ghosting before actually drawing the ellipse

Ellipses in funnels. Id say good job on this. The minor axis was well aligned to the center line

    Plotted perspective. Good obviously

Rough perspective. Good job. The horizontal lines were parallel to the horizon line and vertical lines perpendicular to the horizon. Although this isn't part of the rough perspective i think you should ghost your lines more since most of them are wobbly. Otherwise good job on this

Rotated boxes. This exercise was meant to be hard. I'd say good work. When doing this exercise later focus on the rotation of the boxes more. But good work.

Organic perspective. Good. But there are some boxes who's perspective are alil bit off. But don't worry you'll work on this in the 250 box challenge

Good job on completing lesson 1.good luck as you move on to the 250 box challenge. Work on your ellipses in your warm ups..

    Next Steps:

    1. Work on your ellipses. Focus on smoothness over accuracy

I like how your lines are nice and confident. The only place that i can see some difficulty is the rotated boxes exercise and organic perspective. But no problem since they were meant to be hard. In the rotated boxes exercise i would advice you to draw the boxes close together. It helped me very much with the rotation even though i messed the back planes alittle.

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

This is a remarkable little pen. Technically speaking, any brush pen of reasonable quality will do, but I'm especially fond of this one. It's incredibly difficult to draw with (especially at first) due to how much your stroke varies based on how much pressure you apply, and how you use it - but at the same time despite this frustration, it's also incredibly fun.

Moreover, due to the challenge of its use, it teaches you a lot about the nuances of one's stroke. These are the kinds of skills that one can carry over to standard felt tip pens, as well as to digital media. Really great for doodling and just enjoying yourself.
