hi! im cloud and ill be critiquing your work

    Lines

    Superimposed Lines

your lines seem confident and fraying is mostly only observed on the far side, which is ok for now

    Ghosted Lines

your lines are very straight and dont tend to arc or bow, which is good

    Ghosted Planes

same notes for the ghosted lines as from the ghosted lines segments

    Ellipses

    Table of Ellipses

roughly same critiques for your ellipses as from the ellipses in planes segment, although i should note some do look a little more uneven than others so do make sure to take time with each ellipse you draw

    Ellipses in Planes

your ellipses are smoothly drawn and evenly shaped, are drawn through twice, they also tend to stay within the bounds of the boxes so good work

    Funnels

roughly same critiques as from the ellipses in planes segment, ellipses are mostly following the minor axis well and are snug against eachother and the funnel walls

    Boxes

    Plotted Perspective

your horizontal lines are correctly plotted back to the vanishing points, and the vertical lines are parallel, which is good

    Rough Perspective

your lines all seem to be ghosted properly, and it shows that you understand the assignment well

    Rotated Boxes

the gaps between your boxes are tight, they are drawn through, and are rotated in 3d space so good work here

    Organic Perspective

your boxes converge properly, and the lines making up those boxes seem to all be ghosted properly

from what i can gather, you seem to be ready for the 250 box challenge! also do add these exercises to your warmup pool

    Next Steps:

add these exercises to your warmup pool and continue to the 250 box challenge.

Hello, I will be taking a look at your work today.

    Lines

    • The Super Imposed lines exercise is done well. The lines follow a clear trajectory set out by the original line. The only issue is that there is fraying on both ends of the line.

    • The Ghosted lines are done very well. Most lines are straight, which is a strong first step, and most lines begin on one dot. The next step is to make sure that the line ends on the opposite dot, but that is for the future.

    • Finally, the planes suffer mainly in wobbling and not always starting on the dot and often overshooting. This is more of an issue with the plane than its internal lines, suggesting that there may be some rushing. Make sure to apply the ghosting method and be patient.

    Ellipses

    • The Table of Ellipses has ellipses that fit within bounds and generally has no overlap. However, some ellipses look a little wobbly, especially the ellipses of greater degree (more circular) and the smaller ones. Ghosting applies here as it does with lines.

    • The same thing can be said about the Ellipses in Planes exercise. Most ellipses fall into their bounds and touch the four edges, but sometimes, the execution suffers.

    • The Funnels exercise is very well done. Almost all ellipses fall onto the central line and fit within the funnel. This is generally very challenging.

    • As an extra note, I see a few extra markings throughout that suggest some ellipses may be rushed or ghosted a little too close to the page. It may help to draw from the shoulder more, as that can give more control over the height of the pen from the page.

    Boxes

    • The Plotted Perspective is completed with only minor errors. A few of the boxes have some of their hatched faces not matched correctly to the plane (the leftmost boxes of the last row are notable) and the back lines are slanted. Both are not as important as the other aspects such as the foreshortening and box construction, and should be considered as extras.

    • Much of what was said about line quality can be repeated for the Rough Perspective exercise. Generally, due to its complexity, line quality will suffer, but it is important to remember that line execution is important. However, most boxes generally go towards the vanishing point, which is good.

    • The Rotated Boxes are done very well, and showcase the changing of box vanishing points and convergences. The only things to note are, once again, in line quality. Remember that hatching and emphasis lines should be done with high quality.

    • Finally, the Organic Perspective exercise has many sets of box lines that are parallel, and in some cases, are diverging. This may be caused by rushing and guessing and not planning out the box enough, causing the shallow foreshortening to turn out flat. Without this, boxes do not follow the perspective rules laid out in the lesson and will not look 3D.

      • Also, with this exercise in particular, I see many repeated lines that are not for line weight. These should be avoided.

In conclusion, these exercises are complete, and the main area to improve is in line execution. Remember the levels discussed in the Ghosted Lines exercise, and aim for the second level. There will be a lot of time to practice in the coming 250 Box Challenge and warm-up exercises to hone the skills learned here.

Hello there and congrats on completing lesson 1! I'll be the one reviewing your submission today. Before we start, though, I just wanted to let you know that some of your pages are cut off in your photos. For future submissions, try to get the entire page in your photo so that the reviewer can see all of your work! With that said, we can begin with...

    Lines

You did very well at drawing straight, confident lines throughout this section! Your lines the ghosted lines exercise had a tendency to fall short or go too far, but that's something that will improve with practice! It's more important that your lines are straight and confident than perfectly accurate. Your ghosted planes in particular are just the level of confidence I like to see! The only issue I noticed in this section was some fraying at the start of your lines during the superimposed lines challenge. It was the first exercise, so I'm not too concerned, but make sure to take your time and place your pen in the correct location before starting a mark!

    Ellipses

Throughout the section, you do a good job of drawing confident ellipses! You seem to be drawing through your ellipses 2-3 times, which is exactly what we're shooting for. On your tables of ellipses, there were a few sections where the degree and rotation of the ellipses rotated quite a bit, seemingly arbitrarily. An example would be the left panel of the third row on the first page. I recommend drawing your bigger ellipses such that they have 2 sides touching a boundary, whether that be the boundary of the panel or one of the boundaries added to within the panel. It makes it easier to evaluate what's going right and what's going wrong when there's only one "correct" ellipse. Aside from that, I have no real complaints; any issues with fitting the ellipses exactly how you want them will disappear with practice, and your line confidence more than satisfactory.

    Boxes

I noticed some lines that are at some pretty steep diagonal angles in your plotted perspective. Vertical lines in this exercise should ALWAYS be perpendicular to the horizon. There's no need to guess when drawing boxes in one point perspective like this, lines will either move towards the vanishing points, or they will be perpendicular to the horizon. Your rough perspective doesn't have any glaring flaws in the construction of your boxes; the front and back faces are rectangular, and your depth lines go roughly back to the horizon. That said, your lines seem a bit less confident in this exercise; make sure to apply the ghosting method for every mark you make! Working out of order a bit, your organic perspective exercise is pretty solid! I did notice some boxes with diverging edges, so I figure that it wouldn't hurt to remind you that the sets of parallel lines should always converge as they get farther away from the viewer. Make sure to give yourself enough time to think through your lines in the planning phase (where you place your points)!

Finally, your rotated boxes. Keeping in mind what you said about the rotated boxes exercise, I'll primarily be assessing the right side of your page. There's still some places where boxes that are close together converge at different rates (particularly in the top-right quadrant) Additionally, you're missing the farthest box in the bottom right quadrant. With only half of the exercise serving as a confident showing of your understanding of the information, I'm not quite ready to give you the go-ahead to move on just yet, especially with the missing box. I'd like you to give another shot at the rotated boxes. Make sure to review the content of assignment, particularly the section about estimating rotation. With how close the boxes are, you should be drawing neighboring edges roughly parallel.

Ultamately, you've got a pretty solid submission. Your line confidence is good, and you did most of the assignments well! Just one more page of the rotated boxes exersise, and you should be good to go! Make sure to draw all of the boxes and refer back to the lesson whenever there's any doubt as to what to do next.

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
