Hello, today I will be critiquing your assignment, lets see how you did

Superimposed lines- Not a lot i can say here, you did a pretty good job, there's no fraying on both ends and the lines don't wobble

Ghosted lines- youre at a level 2 which is great, the next step would be to go for level 3. Also I can see there's still some space in between some of the planes in the ghosted planes exercise ,not a huge problem,i would suggest squeezing in some more next time but other than that you did pretty good

Table of Ellipses- it seems like some ellipses does get wider or narrower in some parts, in your warmups try to keep the ellipses at a similar shape. Also I notice for some ellipses they appeared to be drawn through 3 times? But it seems like you manged to reduce down to 2,good job!Overall you did pretty good

Ellipse planes- I do notice that for some, they are deformed but most of the ellipses are drawn with confidence so it does appear that you picked up on this so I wont bug about it.Just make sure you keep your eye on it and focus on confidence, other than that.

Ellipse funnels- Some of them are not aligned with the minor axis but it does seem you are trying to fix the problem so I wont bother, just remember to pay attention when drawing the ellipse through the minor axis.

Plotted Perspective-Nothing to say for this one,you did this pretty well

Rough perspective- It seems for the first page you made the first panel a bit bigger than the others? I'm sure you already noticed but it's something I thought I would bring up.

Anyways, for your line extensions,im a little confused, for some you extended by the line that was drawn but for others you did it by the edge that it was going to connect to? (ex:box on the first page at the on the bottom left?) maybe your not aligning your ruler correctly?Im not you so I'm not sure. I think you were rushing through some maybe? Give yourself time when ghosting the lines and make sure your ruler is aligned with the line that you drew.

Rotated Boxes- It does seem like that some of the boxes are converging instead of rotating. If i am right then i would say to try and redo it as well as to rewatch

Organic Perspective- It do notice that some planes diverge, next time you do this as you warmup,as stated from the guide,”let the student know they may need to give themselves more time to think through the planning phase of their line” Other than that you did well

    Next Steps:

Redo the rotated box exercise and submit it

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hello,I hope you are having a good day. Today I will be critiquing your assessment. (this is only my 2nd critique so i apologize for leaving any thing out or if i get anything wrong)

First thing to note before i begin, I noticed that u didnt do the required number of pages for some of the exercises,(superimposed lines, organic perspective, ellipse table) I recommend that you do these remaining pages as these are important and cannot be overlooked,it will make the critique some what difficult,i will try to critique what you have. I have forgotten some parts of some homeworks sometimes,so I understand. I will ask u to redo the assignments that you forgot a page for.

With that out of the way lets continued

Superimposed lines-I have nothing much to say here other than what I said about the required number of papers. There is no fraying on both sides or wobbly lines so u did a great job here and u have a grasp on the concept.

Ghosting lines- Overall you seem to be at a level 2 or 3,which is pretty good.,theres not a lot I can critique, tho i am a bit confused why you would connect the lines and the amount of lines? Not that it's a big deal with either of theses but in the future try to do more and stick to the rules of the exercise

Ghosted planes- I have nothing much to say,you did pretty well on this one as well, but again please do the required amount

Ellipse tables- Again, please do the required amount.Other than that, you have pretty good confidence in drawing the ellipses,i thing i would say is that there are large gaps between each ellipse which is fine,i struggle with that as well. its very tricky but as long as u are drawing them smoothly, just make sure to try and put less space betwee each ellipse to fit them snugly.

Ellipse planes-It seems like some are deformed,i will paraphrase from the guide, remember to prortize confidence in executing the ellipses over anything else, even if it doesn't touch all the edges. Also again, remember to do the required amount.

ellipse funnels- Nothing much to say,it seems like you understand it,though i recommend that u narrow the gap between the arces.

Plotted perspective-Not a lot to say here, you did great on this one

Rough perspective- Also nothing much to say here. Im not sure why this one has 2 pages but some of the others dont but whatever. You did well on this assignment.

Rotated boxes-Some things to note is that some of the boxes appear to be converging to the same vanishing point. It does seem like u did misunderstand this part of the assignment. When u are doing this for warmups, remember the concept of the exercise is to rotate these boxes, please review the homework or the perspective part of the course. Also u are missing on box at the top right,i wont bug you about it but when you do these for warm ups,do all the boxes. This needs a revision

Organic perspective- Again, please do the required amount of pages, theres nothing much to point out. There is a diverging plane on the box at the first panel in the bottom left corner but im not sure if this a constent problem.

    Next Steps:

Please do the required number of pages for:

    • Superimposed lines

    • Ghosted planes

    • Table of ellpises

    • Ellipse planes

    • Organic Perspective

And review the Rotated boxes execerise reply with follow up work

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hello,I will be critiquing your assignment (This is my first critique so forgive me for leaving anything out),without any further due lets begin.

    Lines-

Superimposed Lines- Your lines are executed confidently but there is fraying on both ends. You could have just been rushing to get it done or wasn't looking where you placed your lines, this can suggest lack of confidence (Which is fine, ive made that mistake sometimes),when you're doing your this for warmups make sure to watch where you're starting.

Ghosted Lines- What ive noticed that sometimes you overshoot or under shoot(maybe between level 2 or 3),I would suggest something that uncomfortable stated, which is lifitng your pen as you hit that point .I also see that sometimes your lines arch a bit,i'll quote what the critique guide says ”they may want to try intentionally arcing their stroke a little in the opposite direction to counteract the natural curve.“

Ghosted Planes- Mostly the same issues as the ghosted lines(again, the quote)

    Ellipses-

Ellipses Table- It seems like for some ellipses you didnt go through them 2 times. There are also some gaps between some elipises which might suggest you are drawing without a concerte goal in mind.I may also see some uneven elipises but im not too sure.

Ellipses Planes- Again, some of your lines are faded,im not sure if you're holding the pen at the right angle? Im not too sure but anyways, but you understood the assigment and it seems like issue with drawing through your elipises 2 times has diminished but it is still an issue that I would look out for.

Ellipses Funnel- I dont have much too say.You definently had improvment in drawing through your elipises 2 times, awesome! You did well.I do think you can squeeze in maybe a couple more funnels but so far it looks great!

    Boxes-

Plotted Perspective- I dont have much to say for this. But it seems like you did 2 more? Im guessing you got it mixed up,thats fine though i do think next time you should reread the matrial next time youre unsure of something

Rough Perspective- It seems like some of youre boxes arent exactly perptucular to the horzion line and your height lines are not always parallel .Thats fine,I struggle with that myself.Again I can see that your lines are arching, maybe you're not using you're shoulder? Again I would say a lot of my critism is that same as the ghosted lines.

Rotated Boxes- It seems like you didnt finish some of your boxes? I would say to finish the assignment and turn it back in. Also, some of your boxes are not exactly convering and are diverging.Im gonna quote from the guide again,"at least one of the boxes' sets of parallel edges will have its vanishing point move - frequently it'll be two. So if all the vanishing points remain the same between boxes that should be oriented differently, the student may be misunderstanding the concepts of this exercise."

Organic Perspective- One big thing I can see is that your constanlty trying to fix your mistakes.I say to let mistakes be mistakes as thats what is requried for the course. Also,I would suggest thinking about youre lines before hand and thinking about the line youre going to make.Anyways, some of your boxes are diverging away, again like i said,I would say give yourself time to think about that line before you mark it and to continue to do that as you move onto the box challenge.Youre using a shallow foreshorting which is fine,I would suggest to lean into more rapid convergence.

    Next Steps:

Anyways,I suggest finishing the rotated boxes exercise and move onto the box challenge

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
