    Hey Solo,

The ring on my sketchbook really was a distraction - I just had those laying around and wanted to use them up. Going forward I will draw on loose pages.

Line weight was really frustrating me, I will keep practicing that specifically.

Regarding the X it was just a way to mark lines that were way off the imagined vanishing point while checking my line extensions. Maybe I was a bit too critical at some points.

Good point on pairing lines, I will try to avoid this going forward.

Thank you for taking the time and looking over my boxes, much obliged!

    Hello PenneMue,

congratulations on completing lesson 1! Recently I also finished it so here are a few pointers:

    Lines/Planes

Your lines wobble and are not drawn with confidence. I am guessing you are either not ghosting sufficiently before putting down the mark or you focus too much on accuracy. Drawing straight lines should take priority over accuracy. Remember that planning each mark is an important part of getting more comfortable, don't rush it. Use the line/planes exercises for your warmups.

    Ellipses

Again a bit wobbly here and there, I found ghosting the shape 2-3 times helped me get more confident with ellipses. You can also try to draw quicker/slower, maybe you just haven't found your speed yet. Otherwise you followed the instructions well and understood the exercises, good job.

    Funnels

Same as above -- I think the funnels look nice, good work!

    Rough Perspective

You understood the exercise and completed it to the best of your current ability. Drawing boxes will get easier with mileage and your grasp of perspective will also improve following this course.

    Rotated Boxes

This one is tough, as you know. Remember that adjacent edges of your boxes run almost parallel to each other and the boxes should sit closer together.

    Organic Perspective

Your boxes shrink as instructed and you have variation in the rotation of them. Well done!

Just to re-iterate -- focus on drawing straight rather than accurate lines!

I feel you should tackle the 250 box challenge next, I draw 5-10 boxes per day and have noticed good progress so far.

    Keep on keepin' on!

    Next Steps:

You can redo the rotated boxes if you want.

Otherwise move on to the 250 box challenge - good luck!

    Hey Leonard,

first of all congratulations on completing lesson 1! As I recently finished mine I would like to offer a few comments in addition to Gekki's observations:

    Funnels

Optionally widen the minor axes of your ellipses the further you move away from the center to get more out of this exercise, as written here.

    Rotated Boxes

The lines you drew through the boxes don't sit parallel to each other which in turn screwed with your alignments. When you use this exercise as a warm-up you should try to keep adjacent lines of different boxes almost parallel.

    Organic Perspective

Remember that we are not drawing cubes but boxes, just wanted to reinforce this point in case it was unclear.

Great work, keep on keepin' on!

    Next Steps:

You should tackle the 250 box challenge next!

    Hey Fiyole,

Your work is hard to critique as you are clearly more experienced than me. I don't see any obvious mistakes, your lines are very clean and confident. It seems perspective is not an issue for you so I am not sure if the 250 box challenge would benefit you.

Maybe you should move on to lesson 2, your call.

    Keep on keepin' on!

    Next Steps:

Either do the 250 boxes or start with lesson 2!

    Hey Edamame,

I agree withe Beesechurger but have an additional comment.

Your work is looking good with the exception of the rotated boxes exercise. You did not follow the instructions, the boxes should only have a small distance between the different front faces. I am guessing you wanted to challenge yourself, which is fine - or you got confused. Either way doing the 250 box challenge will help you get a better understanding of perspective.

    Next Steps:

You should move on to the 250 box challenge if you haven't already!

    Hey Eevee,

I am a beginner so my feedback is limited - a few comments nonetheless:

    Lines

It seems you are making confident marks, don't be too critical about that. I don't see many wobbly lines in your work and you are right to focus more on accuracy going forward. Try to lift your pen when you want to stop the line to reduce overshooting.

    Ellipses

These look great, I think if you keep drawing them every now and then as a warmup you will get tighter lines.

    Perspective

I feel you understood the exercises and did them to the best of your current ability, doing the 250 box challenge will help you improve your grasp of perspective.

Overall I think you can be proud of your work, keep on keepin' on.

    Next Steps:

You should move on to the 250 box challenge!

    Rough perspective

As you said, this lines looks more wobbly, remember, the planning phase of making a box is made in the moment you draw your dots, once you are drawing the line you should only think about the lines, so this lines shouldn't be different from the one in the ghosted lines exercise.

"...only think about the lines..." just clicked for me, great feedback - much obliged!

    Hey Amy,

I am a beginner so my feedback is limited - however I think I spotted some things you could work on:

-You mentioned getting distracted during some of the exercises, I know that feeling. Take your time with every mark, ghost the line a few extra times if you feel it necessary.

-Some of your lines are very curvy in the organic boxes exercise. I'm guessing you concentrated too hard on hitting the planned spot exactly, focus more on getting the line straight rather than accurate.

-Remember you are drawing boxes, not cubes. Your organic perspective exercises were very safe as in you had little variation in the width/height of the different faces of the box, which seemingly lead you to draw some of them like they only had 1 or 2 vanishing points. Try to vary your initial Y shape a bit to challenge yourself.

    Next Steps:

I think you can move on to the 250 box challenge!

The Art of Brom

The Art of Brom

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.

The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
