Congrats on working through this lesson, as this one can be pretty long and intense. Also you are welcome for the critique!

    Organic Forms:

The outline of the forms temselves are draw well with smooth and confident lines. The ellipses at the tip of the forms are mostly drawn well with a few wobbly ones. Also I believe the directions say that you should draw a centerline for your forms, which really helped me with my ellipse at the form's end. The shapes of your contours seem nice and round. I see a few wobbly contours and some that seem to be drawn through twice. Make sure you ghost your lines before drawing them to be confident in where they will go. If you mess up anyway that's absolutely okay, that's what practicing is all about so there are no worries. As long as you keep trying you will get better!

    Insect drawings:

The insects look good. You show solid construction skills, with guidelines that are set and comitted to. The construction pracice is the most important part of the lesson so good job there. The contours that wrap around the surface of the bugs are round and smooth, so nice job. One subjective critique that you also noticed is that some of your linework seem to go a bit overboard on some of the insect drawings. What I mean by that specifically is the linework seems to be too thick, making many of your details get lost in the drawing. I think your first ant and catepillar drawing are great examples of better linework, where less is more. It lets your details like the shadows "speak" loud and clear.

Good work. Keep drawing and keep honing your craft. Most importantly, enjoy it and have some fun along the way!

    Next Steps:

Take a step back to look at your drawing, being aware of what place need more linework and what can be left alone.

    Congrats on finishing lesson 4!

    Organic Forms with Contour Curves:

The outlines that make up the forms are mostly smooth. The contours are also well drawn but they have to the problem of curving in too intensly, making a sharp C shape. I also had this problem and it really flattens the form, removing the illusion of being a round blob. Think about the curves as still being part of an ellipse as that is what it is. Exaggerate your contours and your forms will be very round and appear to have lots of volume!

    Insect Drawings:

Good work on these. While I do not have your refernces in front of me, I can see that you made construction and committed to the construction that you put down. That is the important part and you accomplished that. I can also see that the contour wrap around the forms more than in the organic forms. I can also see contours in places like the eyes, and its clear to me that you were thinking in a 3-d way, so awesome job with that! One critique I do have is on the last picture with the spider and its cast shadow. The cast shadow should also have shadows coming from the other legs, not just the front legs. I think you definitely are ready to move on to the next lesson.

    Next Steps:

    Keep Drawing and having fun!

Good job on working your way through lesson 3 and I apologize for having to wait so long for feedback.

    Arrows:

The arrows are drawn with mostly smooth and consistent curves. The tapering of the arrows shows a grasp on 3-d space. So good job with that! In some place, the extra line weight seems to be a bit heavy, that's not the main objective of the assignment but I think every little bit of feedback helps.

    Leaves:

Nice work. The leaves generally flow with nice curves. All the twisting and bending they do seems appropriate and you got a good variety of positions for your leaves.

    Branches:

The branches seem to have been drawn a bit too large, which is something I also did. There isn't a specified size but for me it didn't help my ability to draw the branches and ellipses small when the time came to draw the plants. Great work though, your ellipses are smooth, evenly round, and confident. The outlines of the branches are also nice and smooth. Nice work challenging yourself with attaching the branches.

    Plants:

The first thing that stood out to me were your semi-contours since I do the same thing to mine. You draw the curves on the end but the middle is nearly a straight line, making the object look flat. Literally think of it as an ellipse, making sure it is round in the middle. Some of the leaves also seem to lack the flow that you had in your leaves exercise. Good job on your cylinders though, like your mushroom stalks and branches. With that being said, I still think your construction was solid enough and that you understand the concepts, you just amde some mistakes on the plants which will happen since we are using fine liners.

Congrats on making it through lesson 4!

    Organic Forms:

The lines that make the form are nice and smooth. The ellipses are well drawn as well, but it seems some of them have ellipse next to each other with the same degree. Exaggerating the ellipses in the forms helps the viewer see how the form is moving in space. Very solid work.

    Insect construction:

For the worry about the light source, based in the demos I assumed the the light would generally just be coming from above the insect, like the organic intersections exercise. For the constuction, great work! One massive compliment I can give is the sheer amount of drawings you did. I can really see you finding your insect groove. The contours are generally clear and it is easy to see. The legs seem to flow well and have good gesture. Your good construction makes the insects feel solid. I also think that drawing multiple angles of the same/ similar insect was an interesting and good idea. Good job drawing the weird angles! For your 3rd concern, I think it may be a lot of detail, but it is okay since you have so many constructional ones that I can still get an idea if how you did.

Awesome job and happy drawing to yourself as well!

    Keep drawing!!!

Thanks for the kind words and fair critique

I definitely see my problem with drawing small ellipses, as it seems to create inaccurate stems or stems that seem to not curve due to my lack of control over small ellipses. This is something I definitely will practice when i warm up. Good luck on your art journey!

Nice Job on finishing lesson 3!

    Arrows:

The arrows are drawn with nice, smooth lines and seem to sell the idea that they move through 3d space, with the arrows growing bigger or smaller to show how far it is. The only thing that would make it seem more believable would be the compression or shrinking of distance between curves as the arrow gets further away.

    Leaves:

The leaves have very exaggerated curves, with smooth outer lines that show the twisting and overlap of the leaf.

    Branches:

Some of the center lines of the branches are wobbly. The ellipses are drawn smooth and change degree, showing how the curves changes effectively. The lines are smooth and confident, and I can see you used the method in the instructioons to achieve smooth lines.

    Plants:

The plants should have had 4 pages that were just construction, with no detail. The plants are drawn confidently and you followed your construction, which is the purpose of the exercise.

    Great Job!

Congrats on working through lesson 3

    Organic Arrows:

The arrows are drawn with very smooth lines, so nice job there. The first arrow looks good, with a clear distinction of closer and further away. The second arrow is not as clear, with varying widths of the arrow, instead of getting bigger or smaller in one direction. The third one is more clear, but has a curve in the middle that is too wide, breaking the illusion of the arrow. The extra line weight added to the edges of curves looks wobbly, so make sure to ghost those more before drawing over the lines.

    Branches:

The ellipses in the inside of the branches look mostly smooth, but they are all the same degree. Making the ellipse thinner or wider can help show how the branch is curving. Some of the lines for the branch outline seem to fray and some are wobbly, which means it may have needed more ghosting.

    Leaves:

The leaves were okay. Some leaves seem too straight, and could be more curvy. The ones that do curve look good, with ends that twist and overlap accordingly. The details seem a bit minimal, but the details are not as imoprtant as any of the construction. What was there such as the curves, should have each curve drawn individually instead of a continuous action.

    Plants:

First off, the assignment says that four pages should be just construction, but all of the plants you drew were detailed. The construction in them seemed to be solid, and you followed the construction you drew as opposed to breaking the construction to look more like the reference.

    Good job and good luck!

    Next Steps:

Try another page of arrows, make sure to watch the demo video to get a good idea of how the arrows might look. Try to make each one smaller to fit a lot more onto the page.

Thats just how I started. They were crazy, with vp's going where ever they felt like going. You may think it means you are not ready, but actually means its the best time to do it. 250 boxes are a lot of boxes, so don't worry about flying through it without learning anything. Take your time and really think about each line you make before you make it. You will get it for sure we are all rooting for you!!!

Congrats on making your way through lesson 2! Your awesome for that.

    Arrows:

Looks good! You show an understanding of what is far and what is getting closer. The lines that make up the arrows are confident and smooth. The extra line weight to reinforce the close parts looks good and smooth as well.

    Organic forms:

The organic forms themselves are drawn smoothly and have an even and consistent shape. Some ellipses ended up outside the form, but it is obvious you tried to keep it in. The more important part is the quality of the ellipses, which is mostly good, with a few wobbly ones. The ones with semi-cotours looked great, with smoothly drawn curves and the forms extended a little bit.

    Texture analysis:

The texture you created were created effectivley and it seems like you really used the notes to your advantage when creating the texture on your own. The only thing that stood out to me was that the third tentacle of the octopuss texture should have had the most detail, since it was in the center of the box, but the textures looked great besides that.

    DIssections:

The texture effectivley used a mix a shadow details and physical landmarks to create the textures. You also succesfully broke the silhouettes of the forms to create convincing textures.

    Form intersections:

To me, some interaction with cones did not seem entirely right, but this was an idea I really struggled with. Everything else looked good, with well drawn shapes and well defined intersections.

    Organic intersections:

Looks good. The forms fold over each other well and accurately cast shadows that contour the shapes below them to reinforce that idea.

    Next Steps:

    Keep Drawing!!!

Congrats on working through lesson 3!

    Arrows:

Some arrows have really wobbly lines. Some also do not seem to "move through space" and do not have a smooth transition from what is supposed to be far away and what is closer. A couple shadows also appear on the outside of the arrows, instead of on the inside of curves.

    Leaves:

The leaves look good, with lots of very exaggerated curves and with details on the edges of leaves that follw the established construction. The leaves also fold with the centerline which helps the drawing feel like a leaf.

    Branches:

The ellipses here are very wobbly. Some lines are also wobbly. It also does not look like the extra pass of the lines was not used.

    Plants:

The plants are supposed to be half purely construction and half with details. Most drawing here seemed to be detailed, maing it hard to see how your construction is. The leaves look nice and flowy. The branch aspects look okay, with some ellipses being wobbly and fraying on the outlines of the branches. The ellipses that make up your pot looked great, they were smooth and round throughout.

    Good luck and keep drawing!

    Next Steps:

Try another page of arrows and branches. Try to get smooth lines for the arrows and ellipses for the branches, which is more important that lines hitting the intened target. Make sure to use the compound strokes to try and get smooth lines when doing the branches.

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

This is a remarkable little pen. Technically speaking, any brush pen of reasonable quality will do, but I'm especially fond of this one. It's incredibly difficult to draw with (especially at first) due to how much your stroke varies based on how much pressure you apply, and how you use it - but at the same time despite this frustration, it's also incredibly fun.

Moreover, due to the challenge of its use, it teaches you a lot about the nuances of one's stroke. These are the kinds of skills that one can carry over to standard felt tip pens, as well as to digital media. Really great for doodling and just enjoying yourself.
