bangs head I can't believe I didn't put the minor axis I'm so sorry. Made a huge difference when I started checking that and drawing bigger helped me control the ellipses WAY more.

I noticed when I drew "square-ish" ellipses in boxes the contact point convergences were good but I tried look more elliptical by to make narrowing and rounding out the edges towards the end only for them not hit the points in a way that converged despite ghosting several times :'(

I can't tell if its being a n00b at drawing circles in perspective or that I shouldn't be narrowing the edges like that because its making the contact off where I want it to be.

Thank you so much again for your help. Still can't believe how many of these you have to go through by yourself. Looking forward to seeing DaB grow!

AHH You are right, I was rushing bec I was hoping to finish DaB before I have to work full time after I graduate so I had a lot of time during the day to dedicate it but even I was a bit unhappy with my L5 Hw. Went back and learned measuring/sighting/proportion and applied it to the hw & took note of the meat clay not dipping down in certain areas. Lesson learned to give this as long as I need to cement in my brain, should know better being a psychology student.

Thank you so much for the feedback.

i would say try the rough perspective again thinking about the shape the 4 points make (smaller, but similar in shape) because when i re did it with the 4 points before i sent the lines back it really helped me understand what i should be looking at! Its helped immensley now that I'm doing my 250 boxes convergences!

    Hi there!

I'm not an official TA but I thought I could help out with what I've learned from my work in Lesson 1.

Your superimposed lines are lined up well. There's fraying but that happens when the lines get very long so that's expected to see!

With your ghosted lines and planes, I can see there's its getting a bit wobbly. That typically happens when we're trying to focus on accuracy but in this exercise the point is to have straight and smooth lines. We'll have time to work on accuracy later but right now at these early stages, its important to develop the habit and ability to produce confident smooth lines.

I think your ellipses in tables/planes/funnels are good, some of them aren't of the same degree but you've drawn through them a couple times which is important so great job on that!

You've plotted your perspective boxes back just as required so good job on that!

Now for the rough perspective box, the instructions say to bring the depth lines back to where they would hit the horizone line NOT where they shoud be going to (to the VP) that way you can see how far off you are from the VP. Additionally, I can see you're struggling with where to put the depth lines. Advice that I got was to ghost your lines and place a dot in the invisible depth for all 4 lines. those dots should then form a smaller but similar shape of your front plane box that you're making. the rough perspective exercise is important to understand because you're making educated decisions, not guesses. I see you struggling with drawing confident lines here as well which could worsen the issue. I think perhaps work on practicing the ghosting exercise every so often could really help build your skill.

As for the last two, I'll let a TA respond to those!

    Hope this helps!

I really like this! I love how there's so much said with minimal linework! I love it!

I like to listen to podcasts while I'm doing the homework. Recently I've been listening to Supernatural & Crime Junkie by Ashley Flowers if that helps :)

    BENJ,

I want to say how extremley appreciate I am that you took so much time and effort to write out your critique. It really helped me understand my own thought process that I wasn't even aware of. You gave me very detailed information that I went over several times before I worked on my revisions. I really want to thank you so much for what you've given me here!

I gave myself a hard look and told myself that I definietly did not plan my marks as much as I should and tried to do the assignments as fast as I could to move on to the more "fun" lessons but I now understand how crucial it is to really plan out the markings. Drawing is a lot of planning and its essential that I start building that planning mentality and the importance of really thinking out that first stroke more. That being said, I took note of your critique on my ghosting planes exercise and I re-did that even though you didn't ask for it because I really wanted to make sure that I work on my planning & aiming for smoother lines as opposed to accuracy. I ghosted my arms more than three times to really get an idea of where my muscles should be going to aim for smooth lines. If its okay, could you tell me if my revised ghosted planes exercises look more like what we are trying to aim for?

I also really appreciate your help on planning out the points & looking at the "smaller" shape that I'm supposed to make in the back plane. That changed everything for me. I think my depth lines are more aimed at the VP with that kind of knowledge than before. That revision that you requested of me is also attached. Please let me know if this is what you are looking for.

Again thank you SO much for your response, I'm sure its annoying to look at the same kind of exercises and probably give people the same kind of response over and over again so thank you so much for being so detailed with your critique!

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
