Partnering with Clip Studio Paint!

One of the many ways we've been able to continue bringing you folks free, reliable lesson material, is by partnering with brands and companies that have things to offer that our audience is sure to be interested in. Our latest partner is one that you guys are sure to love: Celsys, the creators of Clip Studio Paint!

To cut to the short of it, they've provided us a ton of 30 day DEBUT licenses (you can learn more about that here) so our students can try out the software - and if you decide you like it, you can get access to some very nice discounts - from 30% to 50% - on getting your own license, as long as your DEBUT license is still active.

Getting your license

Further down we'll look at what Clip Studio Paint offers, but first let's get to brass tax: how to get your hands on your free license. And don't worry - if you've used a CSP trial before, this should still work for you.

  1. First, get your activation code. This will require you to be logged into your Drawabox account.

  2. Then follow the steps on this page to register your activation code. You'll need a Clip Studio account (which you can make on the same link), and this process will allow you to claim your license.

  3. Next, click this link, then click Downloads, and Annual/Monthly Plan / Update Pass Subscribers. This page will have links for installers for a wide variety of platforms. Using this link will also ensure that if you end up making a purchase later, that a cut of that will go towards supporting Drawabox, at no extra cost to you.

  4. Once installed, you can launch the app and choose the option to use an existing license.

Discounts

Celsys has come to us with more than just a trial license! In fact, the discounts they're offering are quite nice.

If you find that you like the software and want to upgrade to either Clip Studio Paint PRO or Clip Studio Paint EX before the 30 day DEBUT license runs out, you'll be able to get:

  • a 30% discount on a one year subscription

  • or a 50% discount on the first 3 months of a monthly subscription

You can use this link when you're ready to access those discounts: https://ec.clip-studio.com/en-us/offers/debut/plans

These discounts also apply to the single device, dual device, and premium variants of their plans. While they do also offer the option to purchase the software for Windows and macOS with a one-time payment (for those of you who aren't keen on subscriptions), the discounts only apply to the subscriptions.

Comfy approves

I've used a ton of different drawing and painting software over the course of my career, so I can say with confidence that what CSP offers is impressive.

The software is designed around drawing and painting, and it really shows. The brush engine is extremely dynamic, capturing a wide variety of stroke types and effects, making it easy to emulate traditional media if that's what you're after, while still being able to create very polished digital-style graphics.

It also provides a variety of features to make your life easier on a wide variety of projects - from speech bubble and framing tools for comics, to perspective and ellipse guides, to bringing in 3D assets to streamline the production process, to multi-page files, and more. At every turn, it puts the control in your hands, so you can focus on what it is you want to create.

In what little spare time I have had for the last year, I've actually been redrawing my webcomic (just for my own personal enjoyment, no specific plans to publish it any time soon), and I gotta say - choosing to do it in Clip Studio Paint this time around has made a huge difference to my workflow. It has been considerably easier to manage, organize, and produce my pages, and I like to push the boundaries as far as "traditional" layout and framing goes. CSP never let me down.

This section is reserved for low-cost advertising space for art related indie projects.
With how saturated the market is, it is tough for such projects to get eyes on their work.
By providing this section, we hope to help with that.

The Science of Deciding What You Should Draw

The Science of Deciding What You Should Draw

Right from when students hit the 50% rule early on in Lesson 0, they ask the same question - "What am I supposed to draw?"

It's not magic. We're made to think that when someone just whips off interesting things to draw, that they're gifted in a way that we are not. The problem isn't that we don't have ideas - it's that the ideas we have are so vague, they feel like nothing at all. In this course, we're going to look at how we can explore, pursue, and develop those fuzzy notions into something more concrete.
