Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes
8:06 PM, Saturday September 3rd 2022
These were done from late May to late August. I appreciate any and all feedback. Thanks in advance.
Hi, I'll be critiquing your Lesson 1.
You're starting off very well on your Superimposed Lines and Ghosted Lines. Your lines have minimal wobbles and bending, and you clearly demonstrate your understanding of using your shoulder. Though, the slight wobbles may be caused by slight hesitance while executing the line. You'll get tons of more practice with drawling lines in future lessons and challenges so this isn't much of a worry, just keep practicing and you'll see improvement overtime.
Next, your ellipses are very well done too. They appear to be me more confident than your lines and aren't too loose. Some minor complaints I have, that can be easily addressed that some there's ellipses going over the boundaries on Table of Ellipses and some ellipses don't touch all sides of the plane on Ghosted Ellipses in Planes. Another issue, regarding your Funnels, is that the Ellipses are drawn slightly with a tilt, off-centering them from the minor axis. This can easily be fixed by practicing drawing ellipses standing straight up, no tilt, but it could also might become a bad habit if not properly addressed. Though regardless, great work on funnels especially with the ellipses staying in boundaries and the confidence exhibited on Ghosted ellipses in Planes.
Lastly, starting with your Plotted Perspective, thank you for hatching your lines using a ruler, you show clear understanding of the purpose of the exercise. Your Rough Perspective is where your work slightly falters, but that's alright because many people tend to mess up on this exercise as they struggle to focus on drawing straight lines and also estimating them as well to the vanishing point. Even if some of your boxes aren't vertical or horizontal to the horizon line and wobble, you'll get tons of more practice. Your Rotated Boxes are execellent, there's just a slight issue regarding your use of line weight. I can see at the top of the boxes, you've drawn lines over the original line more than once, which is and not what you should be doing. It's good to emphasize which size is facing the viewer and making it pop from the clutter of lines, but you only need to overlap once. You ghost 1 line over the original line and that's all you need to do. But other than that, it's really good! Your Organic Perspective shows that you've gotten more confidence with drawing boxes and drawing lines, which is great for the next challenge.
Overall, you're work is solid and doesn't have any major problems that could negatively affect you in future lessons. I'll be marking this complete and youre next lesson will be the 250 Box Challenge.
Next Steps:
250 Box Challenge
Thanks for taking the time to give thorough feedback. I will do my best to incorporate your feedback into the 250 box challenge.
This is another one of those things that aren't sold through Amazon, so I don't get a commission on it - but it's just too good to leave out. PureRef is a fantastic piece of software that is both Windows and Mac compatible. It's used for collecting reference and compiling them into a moodboard. You can move them around freely, have them automatically arranged, zoom in/out and even scale/flip/rotate images as you please. If needed, you can also add little text notes.
When starting on a project, I'll often open it up and start dragging reference images off the internet onto the board. When I'm done, I'll save out a '.pur' file, which embeds all the images. They can get pretty big, but are way more convenient than hauling around folders full of separate images.
Did I mention you can get it for free? The developer allows you to pay whatever amount you want for it. They recommend $5, but they'll allow you to take it for nothing. Really though, with software this versatile and polished, you really should throw them a few bucks if you pick it up. It's more than worth it.
