I've been adding/using ghosting dots prior to making my lines. See the attached image where I have put trial dots for my lines. Is this OK?

Yup, that's totally fine. Basically I'd say that a single point floating there on the page isn't enough of a commitment. A line absolutely is - so once a line has been put down on the page, you should not redraw it or correct it. But if you find the point you put down wasn't right and you'd like to reposition it, simply draw another. You'll also find that Scylla's explanation about how she works through constructing boxes for the challenge does use quite a few additional points like this.
Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
