Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes
6:04 AM, Friday September 15th 2023
Hi, I just completed all the assignments for lesson 1, please give me some critique, thank you.
Hi! I'll be reviewing your lesson 1 homework.
Lines
Your superimposed lines have some fraying at the start, make sure to position your pen carefully when you are making a line. Your ghosted lines are good however some on them have some wobbling and arching. You haven't uploaded your pictures for the ghosted planes without ellipses.
Ellipses
Your ellipses seem confident, however I have noticed some of them are a little pointy or get straight-ish? Some of these ellipses in planes are deformed. Overall, well done.
Boxes
Your rough perspective seems fine but it seems that you have drawn over some of the lines? In the future please avoid this. There is some wobble in your mark making for the organic perspective and some perspective issues however these will be addressed in the 250 box challenge. Your rotated boxes is very well done except for a few boxes.
Next Steps:
Well done! You may proceed to the 250 box challenge and make sure to use all these exercises as warm ups before any sitting.
Thanks for the critique!
I personally notice that I have the tendency to draw many lines on top of each other, this is a very strong habit when I working with a pencil that I trying to break.
I will add the ghosted planes without ellipses later, I forgot to photo them.
While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.
The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
