This was an entire evolution just getting through this exercise took a lot of growth and I feel like I’ve gained a lot of confidence in all regards as this challenge went on. Oh and Hi Tofu. I had to divide the entirety of the exercise into three seperate links they should all be in the comments above.

Hi there, I'll be handling your box challenge critique.

Not only does the challenge help deepen your understanding of important concepts but it shows your desire to learn as well. That being said I'll try to keep this critique fairly brief so you can get working on the next steps as soon as possible.

Things you did well:

  • It's good to see that you're taking the time to plan and evenly space your hatching lines. This helps keep your boxes tidy and makes them look more solid.

  • You're doing a great job of experimenting with orientations, proportions and rates of foreshortening. Experimenting is an important habit to build when learning any new skill, it helps form a more well rounded understanding. I hope you'll continue to display and nurture this habit in the future.

Things you can work on:

  • You have some noticeable wobbling occuring in your lines. It does improve towards the end of the submission but there's still room to improve your consistency. Remember that line confidence is our top priority and that accuracy will improve as we continue to build up more mileage. Something I would recommend doing if you aren't already is that while drawing try lifting your pen while it's in motion. You may find that you overshoot your intended stopping point to start with but as you build up muscle memory you'll find the sweet spot and know when to lift in order to hit the intended stopping point. By keeping your arm moving you'll keep your lines confident rather than slowing down and hesitating as you reach the end.

  • Line weight isn't a requirement of the challenge but I do recommend practicing it in your future attempts (it does look like you may have made a few attempts at it throughout the submission but your lines aren't confident to tell if it's intentional or you just hesitating). It's an incredibly useful tool but one that people often require a fair bit of mileage before they feel comfortable applying it. The sooner you start to build up that mileage the sooner you'll see better results.

  • There are times when your lines converge in pairs or you attempt to keep your lines a bit too parallel which results in them diverging. This is an example of lines converging in pairs, and this shows the relation between each line in a set and their respective vanishing point. The inner pair of lines will be quite similar unless the box gets quite long and the outer pair can vary a lot depending on the location of the vanishing point. Move it further away and the lines become closer to parallel while moving it closer increases the rate of foreshortening.

The key things we want to remember from this exercise are that our lines should always converge as a set not in pairs, never diverge from the vanishing point and due to perspective they won't be completely parallel.

I won't be moving you on to the next lesson just yet, each lesson builds off concepts in the previous course material so if you move forward with un-addressed issues you end up just creating further issues on top of them.

I'll be asking you to draw 30 more boxes please. Focus on consistently drawing confidently, if left unchecked it'll cause issues as you move forward through the course.

Once you've completed your boxes reply to this critique with a link to them, I'll address anything that needs to be worked on and once you've shown you're ready I'll move you on to the next lesson.

I know you can do this and look forward to seeing your work.

Next Steps:

30 more boxes please.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

These are looking better, there's still a bit of arching occurring in your lines which shows you may not be utilizing your shoulder enough.

I'm hopeful that you can continue to improve and address this on your own time during warmups so I'll be marking your submission complete.

Keep practicing boxes and previous exercises as warmups and best of luck in lesson 2.

Next Steps:

Move on to lesson 2.

This critique marks this lesson as complete.

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
